About

A Halloween Tradition at CCNY

For years, City College has, through various student government teams, hosted campus-based Halloween events, offering a way for CCNY students to take a break from their studies and observe a favorite childhood holiday with their friends.

Bringing the Campus and Community Together

In 2016, we were asked if we could think about hosting something that would bring together our campus and Harlem neighbors in celebration of the holiday, but also as a way to highlight our Theater Department and the tremendous work the students, faculty and staff do each day.

The Birth of Scarefest

And with that, Scarefest was born! Each year, we open our North Academic Center building to thousands of guests of all ages. This event is a true cross-campus event:

Hosted by the Theater Department and the Office of Institutional Advancement, Communications & External Relations and supported by our Facilities and Public Safety Teams. The Scarefest design (based on CCNY alumni Irwin Zahn's favorite grotesque, as drawn by CCNY Professor Gerardo Blumemkraz) is reimaged each year with a nod to that year's spooky theme and our partners extend out into the Harlem Community, in collaboration with the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce.

We look forward to welcoming kids of all ages to campus each year on October 31st!
