Fifteen City College of New York graduate students walked away with cash prizes for their work at the Ninth Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium. The symposium offers students the experience to share their findings in a professional and academic setting. �������� is the recipient of four of the eight Jonas E. Salk Scholarship awarded by The City University of New York this year. The scholarships recognize exceptional students who plan careers in medicine and the biological sciences. As Salk Scholars, Alex Bonilla, Muhddesa Lakhana, Min Gyu Noh and Joy Patel will each receive a stipend of $8,000 to be appropriated over three or four years of medical studies. A five-member team from ��������’s BIC Program topped an international field to win the Gold Pencil in the One Club’s Young Ones Competition at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan. In potentially transformative research for both the recycling and concrete industries, a City College of New York civil engineering team is developing a glass powder to replace cement in the production of concrete. The material conceptualized by Dr. Julio Davalos and doctoral student Marija Krstic, was tested for sidewalk construction in South Jamaica, Queens, by the New York City Department of Design and Construction on May 5. To curb the advance of invasive raccoons on the island nation, City College of New York doctoral student Jamie Kass will work with Japanese scientists to model and track their spread. Kass is the recipient of a National Science Foundation grant to conduct research on this management issue through the East Asia Pacific Studies Institutes.
