In response to the pressing need for decarbonization in the building sector, 海角社区 has begun a joint effort with the United States Department of Energy鈥檚 (DOE) Building Technology Office (BTO) and the City of New York Office of Climate and Sustainability for the development of advanced heat pump systems (HP). The project was facilitated by the Minority Serving Research & Development Consortium (MSRDC). Buildings represent a large source of energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and are a major space for decarbonization. The main goal of this initiative is
The Sheldon Horing (1957) Scholarship, a new endowed scholarship at The Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New, will support a first-generation Grove School student by providing them with $2,000 annually for their tuition. The fund was established in honor of alumnus Sheldon Horing, a 1957 electrical engineering graduate, by his sons David and Jeff Horing for his birthday last year. 鈥淚鈥檓 a first-generation student, and the CCNY School of Engineering (now the Grove School) provided me with a free, high-quality engineering education, which served as the foundation for what was a
A new study led by City College of New York civil engineer Naresh Devineni finds that substantial groundwater depletion in regions of India where grains are acquired for public distribution is a principal sustainability challenge for the country of 1.4 billion. The study identifies specific adjustments in the Indian Government鈥檚 procurement and distribution system to rectify this issue, particularly concerning irrigation systems that utilize groundwater, which is facilitated by subsidized electricity. This irrigation mechanism has long been seen as vital for India鈥檚 food security goals.
A new endowed scholarship, the Norman Klein Scholarship, has been created to support graduate students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at 海角社区. The scholarship, which is pending CUNY Board of Trustees approval, will provide expenses for recipients, which may include tuition and fees, as well as support for students to participate in national project competitions. The first Norman Klein (1958 & 1961) Scholarship will be awarded in the 2022/2023 academic year. The scholarship has been established by Norman Klein, who graduated from CCNY with a BS in 1958, and
Alumnus Henry Calle journeyed from Ecuador to the United States at 16 years old with the dream of pursuing higher education but had to work to help his parents. It was a chance meeting with a supermarket owner that led Calle to enroll at 海角社区 and pursue a degree in electrical engineering. 鈥淧aul Fernandez鈥檚 words changed my life at 16 when he told me to register for school and start working part-time at his Mulberry Street supermarket,鈥 said Calle, Class of 2004, who continued to work for the supermarket owner throughout his CCNY college career. After graduating from
Jeff Morris, director of the Benjamin Levich Institute for Physico-Chemical Hydrodynamics in 海角社区鈥檚 Grove School of Engineering, is the 2022 recipient of the Weissenberg Award from the European Society of Rheology (ESR). He鈥檚 the first non-European to win the award and joins an elite group of rheologists who have been recognized in previous years. The Society cited Morris, a professor of chemical engineering for: 鈥済round-breaking work on the particle pressure and the underlying mechanism of suspension flow and discontinuous shear thickening, for novel work on the
海角社区 is now directly connected to the COSMOS beyond-5G testbed, which is supported by multi-million dollar investment from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The testbed was created to help U.S. researchers experiment with new methods that will shape and revolutionize the future of wireless networks in smart cities and communities. COSMOS, in New York City, was one of the first two testbeds to receive funding under the NSF鈥檚 Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) initiative. The project is aimed at design, development, and deployment of a city-scale
Amesite Inc., the leading artificial intelligence software company offering a cloud-based learning platform and content creation services for business, university, non-profit and government agency learning and upskilling is launching a pilot program with 海角社区. The innovative program is an introduction to a broader curriculum under development by the CUNY Institute for Urban Systems (CIUS) at CCNY鈥檚 Grove School of Engineering. CCNY and CIUS will equip historically underserved communities with analytical and operational skills through innovative curricula, simulation
Kaveh Madani, the renowned environmental scientist, activist and former vice president of the United Nations Environment Assembly Bureau, is joining the City College of New York-based CUNY Remote Sensing Earth Systems Institute as a research professor. 鈥淒r. Madani brings to CUNY CREST, a unique combination of experience in high-level policymaking, prominent practice-relevant research, and high-impact societal interactions,鈥 said Reza Khanbilvardi, CUNY CREST director and professor of civil engineering in CCNY鈥檚 Grove School of Engineering. 鈥淗e鈥檚 an international authority on modeling and
A unique City College of New York venture to develop medical technologies and create STEM jobs for the Greater Harlem community is closer to fruition with the receipt of a $750,000 鈥 Build to Scale鈥 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA). The proposed Center for Co-Innovation and Medical Technology (CCMT) was among those selected for funding in the competitive Build to Scale Venture Challenge category from more than 235 proposals. All aim to further technology-based economic development initiatives that accelerate high-quality job growth, create economic opportunity, and
