Arlette Reynoso
Sociology and Black Studies Major
Mellon Mays Fellow
Arlette Reynoso is completing a dual BA in sociology and black studies at City College. Their environment - the Bronx - has instilled in them an incredible curiosity about how the systems around them function to create the material conditions they experience. This has led them to their research interest, exploring how African culture has been translated across the Black diaspora through art, literature, movies, music, and food, and how it interacts with other layers of social stratification, such as class, immigration, gender, and sexuality. Their current project focuses on how queer Dominicans navigate their identity and positionality within different physical spaces throughout New York City. They are interested in the creation and preservation of these different communities within archives. After completing their BA, they will pursue a PhD and hope to be a bridge, connecting these communities through education, organization, and action.
